Artequick- key drug in the successful implementation of FEMSE expansion in Comoros.

The Comorian Ministry of Health and the Center for Disease Control of the Kenyan Ministry of 
Public Health invited on 21st to 26th March 2013 a delegation of eight (08) persons of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People's Republic of China. The delegation was headed by Mr. Yu Wenming, vice-president of the bureau. They met Mr. Ikililou Madi, president of the Union of Comoros and Dr. Moinafouraha Ahmed, Comorian minister of Health. They visited also the Center for Disease Control of the Kenyan Ministry of Public Health, the National Center for Malaria Control, and had discussions with Dr. Willis, director of the Center for Disease Control and Dr. John, director of the National Center for Malaria Control.
In Comoros, they talked about the China-Africa cooperation in traditional medicine and the project of malaria fast eradication by Artequick, and signed “the memorandum of understanding of China-Comoros cooperation in traditional medicine”.


Since 2007, under the direct leadership of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, under the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Commerce and the support of the relevant departments of Guangdong Province, Guangzhou University Traditional Chinese Medicine, on the base of national and international past experiences on malaria prevention and treatment, has used the advantages inherent to artemisinin-combined therapy to explore strategies to fast control and eliminate the disease. With the creation of the center for malaria control in Comoros, the implementation of strategies such as Mass Drug Administration, mass prevention, the FEMSE (Fast Elimination of Malaria by Source Eradication) project in Moheli Island and Anjouan Island has been considerably successful in these malaria-endemic regions. The incidence of malaria dropped to zero. The fourth generation of Artequick, artemisinin-combined therapy was the main drug used. The FEMSE project in Anjouan, (the second phase of FEMSE in Comoros) started in October 2012. Around 950,000 people took Artequick confirming the drug efficacy, quick action, low side effects, compliance and other advantages.
