he living people should pursue goals. Somebody pursues enjoyment, somebody pursues stimulation, somebody pursues coziness and somebody pursues dedication.

A commie should contribute to the people.' It's what the associate Professor LiGuoqiao pursues, the subdecanal of Guangzhou College of TCM and the director of Research Lab of malaria.

                               Hold his ground for eighteen years

LiGuoqiao has spent eighteen years in the battlefront of antimalarial.

Malaria is a kind of parasite disease with the highest morbidity in the world now. Every year, there are more than two billion people suffering from it.

In the 1960s, LiGuoqiao moved the antimalarial research center of Guangzhou College of TCM to WuZhi mountain and Yunnan boundary, with the instruction of Premier Zhouenlai. It is damp and hot there and it has been called "pestilence and malaria area" in history with high mountain, steep slope, thick forest and wild animals. Casting all the hardship behind of their back, LiGuoqiao and his partners decided to abide by the guideline: Where there is a patient, where they will be; Where there is a patient, where they will go.

In Yunnan, in a late evening they got the information from Awa mountain, saying there is a pregnant woman with cerebra malaria was in a coma. As soon as LiGuoqiao and his assistant heard of it, they started out immediately. After the bumping of three hours in the car, they came to the foot of Awa mountain in the early morning. No road ahead. In front of them was the thick forest with wild animals around. But they knew time is life. They ventured to climb up the mountain. In the process of climbing, when they felt hungry or tired, they just drank some sugar water and then went on. Finally they got the destination at 9:00 in the evening. They managed to earn time to rescue two lives from death.

In WuZhi mountain area, Hainan, LiGuoqiao was becoming thinner and thinner due to his nervous work year by year. In the summer, 1983, he got the nephrolith with severe pain. When it was in the rain season and the peak time of high morbidity of malaria. But he didn't tell his partners about it, and went on working. In an evening when he was ready to take a rest after the treatment for the last patient, a very serious patient was sent to him from the deep mountain of Li village. Just at that time, his nephrolith was in an outbreak. He didn't say anything and devoted himself to the salvage. Two hours later, when the patient is saved, people started to note that the big sweat on his head and his face color had completely turned pale. He was suffering the pain of nephrocolic for a whole night and only fell into sleep nearly in the next morning. The next day, when he was seen treating patients again, people are very surprised. A patient's family stared at his busy back and asked the nurse:"Is he Baiqiuen?"

Sometimes, the patients needed to be transfused in the salvage. However, in the mountain area, there was no blood bank for the patients. In some emergencies, provided the blood type was compatible, LiGuoqiao always hold out his arm first to let blood. In the several years, he has donated his blood for five times. Also his partners did that.

As many patients needed to be tended, LiGuoqiao and his partners always acted the role of doctor and nurse to treat and tend the patient around day and night.

The saved patients usually presented some nurture to the doctor to express their appreciation. LiGuoqiao rejected politely or transferred them to the patients who were still under treatment. That was his routine. Once in JinBo farm, Dongfang county, LiGuoqiao transfused his blood to the patient to rescue him. A farm worker who saw the moving scene at the right moment, went back home and braised a bowel of chicken soup for LiGuoqiao which was proposed to left for his wife after parturition. But LiGuoqiao sent it to a patient. When the patient received the chicken soup, his eyes were full of tears.

Career is more important than life

LiGuoqiao pursues his life goal firmly so he was usually praised by people. Also there are few people didn't understand him: Don't he find trouble by himself?

Whatever people said, he insisted on his own way.

The plasmodia parasitized in the red blood cell in human body is the pathogeny of malaria¡£In the growth period of 48 hours, it reproduces in several times or in ten times. The P.falciparum plasmodia causes coma or death within several days. It is recorded in the international literature: Most of the malaria patients are P.falciparum malaria patients. The mortality of cerebra malaria is 20%--40% in them. The most curative effect is still as low as 17% on record.

In LiGuoqiao's opinion, people should find the rule of the plasmodia's life and use it to conquer malaria.

Day and night, LiGuoqiao carefully observed the changes of the plasmodia under microscope. He recorded every tiny change of the patient's temperature and every data of the blood smear in the plasmodia's reproducing period.

Files of case records and thousands of curve charts flowed in front of LiGuoqiao's eyes, the temperature curves of P. falciparum malaria overlapped the curves of growth period of plasmodia:There were two fever peaks during a reproducing period of P.falciparum plasmodia! All the curve charts showed the truth!

"Is that possible?"LiGuoqiao couldn't believe his eyes. In the medical literature, in the encyclopedia of medicine or in the professional textbook, all the conclusions written like this: Eevery fissiparity causes a fever period.

"It should be changed if I am right!" LiGuoqiao decided to conduct the trial completely again.

The cases, records, assays, data, curves were all in process...

After three years, totally 93 typical cases, thousands of data, uncountable painstaking efforts, a conclusion came out indubitably which was the same as before.

But LiGuoqiao still had question:"Could it possible that the phenomena of two fever peaks was distorted by the repeated infections of two batches of plasmodia?"

In order to exclude that possibility, he must find someone healthy to take the trial. He decided to take a venture to inject a batch of P.falciparum plasmodia into his body.

Some years ago, LiGuoqiao conducted two trails to test the curative effect of acupuncture to treat malaria. Once he planned to conduct the self-infection of P.vivax on himself and he knew everybody disagreed on it, so he asked a nurse to inject the blood with plasmodia to him. After the self-infection worked, he required his partners to conduct many new trails of acupuncture treatment over his body, like the deep acupunctures on some forbidden zones. The hyperpyrexia caused his dry lips, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly and the decrease of red blood cells. The nurse was so sorry to see that and couldn't stop crying:"I shouldn¡¯t give you that injection."

This time, the self-infection of P.falciparum was instead of the self-infection of P.vivax. To the people lack of immunity, it might cause a coma from the beginning and then develop to fetal cerebra malaria.

LiGuoqiao had made all the preparations for self-infection. However, the other doctors and nurses were unwilling to do that on him.

At dusk in the hot summer, he had a talk with his colleague Doctor Guoxingbo. They talked about the life and the career until deep night, LiGuoqiao said a sentence from the bottom of his heart:"a person should make some contribution to the people and society".The sentence moved Guoxingbo again and he promised to inject the blood with P.falciparum plasmodia into LiGuoqiao's body. In order to ensure the safety, LiGuoqiao and Guoxingbo made an integrated plan for the trail. Guoxingbo even listed his own name to the volunteer list of self-infection.

One day, two days, three days had passed. LiGuoqiao was busy dealing with the work. On the fourth day, Li's temperature started to ascend. According to the plan, he left the base and flied to Guangzhou, accompanied by Guoxingbo. The day LiGuoqiao's family were busying moving the house. Out of his wife and daughters' expectation, LiGuoqiao suddenly appeared in front of them. How happy they were! But as soon as he came in, he laid down with shivers. At that night, LiGuoqiao moved into the hospital. Then Guoxingbo and his partners carried microscope and other instruments to the hospital, and it becomes a special lab for malaria research.

Time flied. They accumulated a series of data such as temperature, growth process of plasmodia etc....LiGuoqiao had experienced the two fever peaks during a fissiparity period. As the disease became worse and worse, Guoxingbo thought they should stop the trial. He took some antimalarial to LiGuoqiao and asked him to take them immediately. But LiGuoqiao refused the medication and stood it. What he considered was not the pain and danger, but the fact that the trail must be testified completely!

Guoxingbo still worried about his illness. He worried a fever might come again and then the coma even the fetal cerebra malaria. LiGuoqiao knew that and comforted him:"It doesn't matter, I will be ok soon." Then he took up the pen and wrote:"I asked Guoxingbo to conduct the self-injection trail on my body. When I am in a coma, don't give me antimalaria temporarily and that's also what I asked him to do. Those are our research plan and please don't blame him."

LiGuoqiao survived at last. He finished a complete trail on his own body.

Through the systematical and accurate verification and re-verification of 93 cases and 11 self-infection volunteers including LiGuoqiao, the significant find in the science of biology had been verified scientifically.

 The new find will have a direct significance if it is applied in the clinic, such as the diagnosis of severe malaria, the forecast of illness development, the correct use of remedy and medication, or it is useful to increase the curative effect, accelerate the new drug trial of antimalarial and the effect test of antimalarial. The new find is a supplementary to the growth rule and its mechanism of P.flaciparum plasmodia.

LiGuoqiao took all kinds of effective medical measures based on the new find of the growth rule of P.falciparum, and control the mortality of cerebra malaria under 10% which has the leading status in the world.

The fruit of LiGuoqiao and his partners won the National Significant Scientific & Technology Award and Invention Award. Many experts showed the big surprise and admiration to such deep research and unique insight.

In the eighteen years, LiGuoqiao and his partners overcame the medical difficulties one after one and six of their valuable theses have been published on the medical professional magazines domestically and abroad, and they have finished clinical research of eight kinds of new antimalarial.

Contribute without asking for award

LiGuoqiao made an outstanding contribution to fight back the malaria. Foreign experts said: LiGuoqiao's research fruit is the first class in the world. Generally speaking, such successful expert should have the first class of living condition. However, LiGuoqiao thought, as a commie he should have the high standard in work instead of enjoying preferential treatment in life. When he was on errands, he had never accepted the special care.        

Occasionally when he used the car for private affair, he handed in the fare initiatively. It was not difficult to visit home, but in the 18 mid-autumn days in the 18 years, he only came back home twice.

In the 18 summer and winter vacations, he didn't stop working and never asked for the call-back pay. Every time when he transfused his blood to patients, he didn't accept the money.

LiGuoqiao also thought, we should be more loyal to career than to the personal honor. LiGuoqiao and his colleagues finished the important subject of compound Artemisinin single dose last summer. The single dose made the cure rate of P.falciparum malaria increase to 95%. The Ministry of Health of GuangDongplanned to arrange the final identification for their research fruit. However, LiGuoqiao found the cure rate of 95% is an average level. To the first infected patient, the cure rate couldn't reach 90%, and that wasn't what he wanted. He decided to postpone the identification although some people didn't get through. He said, we can't lower the quality of our research fruit in order to get the honor.

LiGuoqiao takes good care of his partners instead of himself. A female colleague usually went home on spring festivel eve. LiGuoqiao or Guoxingbo usually rode a bike to take her to the railway station. It became the much-told story in the area. Once Guoxingbo got illness, LiGuoqiao went to him at once and tended him carefully. Mr. Liu who works in the lab for assay said:"You must work hard here, but you can feel the atmosphere like your family. After you come here you'll never want to leave. The life here is rich and not worse than other place."

Their research lab was located in Wuzhi Mountain, and he made an unwritten routine: Willing to come, free to leave.

In the several years, there are more and more volunteers coming to the base to work. Even after they leave here, they missed it. Because they learned it from LiGuoqiao: What's the joy of life, and what should a person pursue.
